Shima Carter

Shima had the good fortune to be introduced to yoga, breath work, and meditation as a child by her parents in a loving yoga community in Jamaica. Her love of yoga, and respect and understanding of its capacity to heal the body, mind, and spirit grew during her pursuit of a doctorate degree in physical therapy and, later still, as a trauma-sensitive social worker collaborating in diverse communities.

Personally and professionally—through life’s changes and transitions, sicknesses and health, during highs, lows, and the in-betweens—Shima has found yoga to be a tool that helps us find, re-find, and stand in our deepest, truest self, and to make empowered conscious choice. Shima believes yoga cultivates spaciousness, clarity, curiosity, and connection to heal self and community.

After decades of being a student, Shima earned her 200 hr RYT certification and completed TC-TSY’s Trauma Sensitive Yoga Foundations in 2026. With the lens of an eternal beginner’s mind, Shima is grateful for all of her many teachers, particularly Anna Hughes and Stephanie Phelan whose generosity, authenticity, and wisdom have inspired and expanded her life on and off the mat.

Shima’s Vinyasa classes are invitations to move the body, still the mind, and experience the fullness of self. Her sequencing provides opportunities and freedom for students to take the forms—vigorous/energetic or restorative/calm—that best serve their today’s needs. Hang out in Child’s Pose or take every Vinyasa. Bend a knee or take an arm balance. Your practice, your journey,  your choice. Come practice together.
